calendar mashup

I'm surprised that mashups are so easy. Here are my girls in Port Stephen's on a recent holiday.

More on LibraryThing

I'm impressed with my LibraryThing search widget.
1. It worked, and
2. It was simple to do.

Enter New Zealand into the search box and see what books in my library come up tagged NZ. What do you think?

LibraryThing and Delicious update

Realised I hadn't actually been inserting links, just web addresses in previous two posts so here are the actual links (now that I've worked out how to do it!)

LibraryThing

Delicious

LibraryThing

And here is a link to my LibraryThing catalogue. http://www.librarything.com/catalog/lindanz
Although, I'm not really into cataloguing my books as such; too much like a busman's holiday.

Here is a link to my bookmarks http://delicious.com/lindanzaus

Wiki success

I've discovered that it's all in the product. Initially tried using PBWiki but got stuck then someone put me onto Wetpaint and I haven't looked back since. Very easy to use, very intuitive and I had myself a functioning wiki within a few hours!

Koonji

I have put together a koonji which you can have a look at - http://www.koonji.com/showKoonji.htm?koonjiId=1065

Please let me know what you think.

On hindsight, it might have been better to make a generic guide and not make it library specific.

Not quite sure what I will do with it now...??

Wiki SOS

Trying to put together a wiki for an e-learning centre for staff - a bit sticky. Has potential but need to talk to colleagues.

Also keen to develop a wiki for local history. The advantage of not having to wait around for someone else to update our library local history webpages definitely struck a chord with me as I often have to wait 3-4 months for my updates to appear! Very frustrating.

But I am getting bogged down in the nuts and bolts of making a wiki. Not as easy as a blog I'm finding. And it seems every time I go to the PBWiki manual for some help, that bit of the manual hasn't been created yet (and because it's a wiki it then suggests that I might like to create that page! Me??!! But I know nothing!).

Specifically, I'd like to create template that an individual could save a copy as their own page in the wiki and make changes to. Any wiki experts out there?

RSS Feeds

This week I set up a bloglines account and added the following RSS feeds:

Powerhouse Museum, photo of the day (as instructed)
Christchurch City Libraries new fiction weekly listing ('cos I used to work there)
Australian Education (doing TAFE training and assessment course)
Christchurch Press local news (my home town)

I was running out of inspiration for my last two so selected from bloglines quick picks.
Publishers Weekly best sellers news
NYT books

What do I like about RSS feeds? Well, great way to keep informed and up to date if you are interested in a particular area or a long way from home!

Although I can see that they could become a time trap or a procrastination tool and I wouldn't want to subscribe to any more than say 10 RSS feeds at once. That's just me and I am a bit of a time freak.

I will be particularly interested to watch the Christchurch City Libraries feed (they have others but I just chose the new fiction listing) as this could be a good example of what libraries can achieve with RSS feeds. Similar maybe to a SDI service and could be broken down into genres or non-fiction subjects as well. Interesting....

Here comes everybody

Just finished reading Clay Shirky's "Here comes everybody" and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in social technology. Great examples and very readable.

Worked it out

Week 3 of the Library 2.0 online program and I worked out how to add a "gadget" to my blog layout so I could more appropriatly credit the photo I found on flickr.

Not sure about attributing images. I found this wonderful photo on flickr (petra jane's photostream) and couldn't figure out how to attach a caption acknowledging the source so the best I could do was to put a statement in the description field under the title of my blog. The photo was on flickr as "some rights reserved" which seems to include attributing it as specified by the creator. I couldn't find any specifications so does that mean I don't have to attribute it at all? Help, I just want to do the right thing!

Weaving a basket of knowledge

A kete is a Maori basket and with this Learning 2.0 online program I hope to begin gathering a new set of skills for myself and weaving them into a basket of knowledge that I can share with others.

Up until recently I have been sceptical of blogs and Web 2.0 but I am beginning to see potential uses now so I'm keen to learn more. My biggest concern, I guess, is that it's all very well to spend time and energy putting these blogs together but I notice that many have hardly any comments posted eg. the library blogs used as examples in this program.

How do our communities know about our blogs? Do they know how to use blogs? what blogs are? Will they bother to use our blogs?
